Today let’s talk fashion week. After attending several Sydney AKA Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia I wanted to highlight the difference between that experience and the experience of attending Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival.
- It’s Media and Press only in Sydney
The biggest difference I found was that the MBFWA is invite only and consisted of only media, industry and press. It’s not really open to the public during the week but they host a separate show called Mercedes Benz Fashion Weekend Australia which consists of two days showing the public the shows back to back but even this doesn’t include all shows and there are still exclusive media only events happening during the week (such as press parties, opening shows in exclusive locations, after parties, etc – in other words you can’t purchase an invite into these events you must simply be invited)
- New Collection VS Buyable Collection
I definitely think this is another huge difference. I was shocked to find out that VAMFF runway shows were not only open to general public but they were also showcasing looks that were already available in stores such as Myers or David Jones. It was stock that wasn’t new and sometimes had been readily available for a few weeks already. I guess because the aim at VAMFF is to get sales from the public who are watching. They even have a pop up store to buy the runway looks right outside – super handy for when you want to buy a piece you just saw. In MBFWA the looks you see generally take 6-9 months before they come out in stores so the media get a sneak preview and international buyers are able to see which pieces they want to buy for stock in their stores.
What do you think of the two shows? Which one would you prefer? Let me know in the comments below.
