Today I had the pleasure of interviewing the dynamic duo behind the designs of the brand Heaven Please. Yi Chan and Lary Cheung are the talented duo behind Heaven Please – a brand specialising in dreamy and extraordinary designs. The brand launched its first collection in 2012 and has been always been searching for an alternative narrative from the language of design details and silhouttes. During my time in New York I had the honour of securing some time backstage to interview Yi Chan and Lary Cheung about their “Wrong Number” collection. Let’s take a look at what we got up to in those 10 minutes.
1. Tell me a bit about your collection
Yi & Lary: The collection is inspired by the novel Wrong Number written by Hong Kong writer Liu Yi Chang. The story paints two different endings and we conveyed this by playing with two different feelings for every piece in our collection. For example one jacket could evoke two different feelings even though it is the same piece. There is also a surprise ending and we expressed that through our final model who walked down with a gold color scheme which was entirely different from the rest of the collection.
2. How did you start designing?
Yi & Lary: It is currently our 6th year and 12th season. Our first experience was opening a select shop in 2012 and from then on we started expanding our designs.
3. Who is your inspiration?
Yi & Lary: Our inspirations come from artists such as Charlotte Gainsburg and as of recent we are in love with Tim Walker’s photography. These artists really inspire us.
4. Is this your first time at New York Fashion Week? How do you feel about your experience this season?
Yi & Lary: This is our first time doing a show at New York Fashion Week and we will never forget it. The rushed and fast paced feeling and busy schedule is worth it and just so different from what we experience in Hong Kong. There is nothing like it.
5. What direction do you see yourself going? What’s next?
Yi & Lary: We would love to explore new markets. Our aim is to share our dreamy and dramatic designs with the world. We also hope to do a pop-up installation some time soon.
That’s all for today with Yi Chan and Lary Cheung – the creative duo behind Heaven Please. I hope you enjoyed the interview and feel free to comment below and let me know your thoughts on the up and coming designer! Special thank you to Hong Kong Trade Development Council for hosting the Fashion Hong Kong runway show and this interview for us.
