Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Harrison Wong the creative designer behind the label of the same name. Harrison Wong is a contemporary apparel and accessories brand for urban men and women. The label has an edgy, aggressive design but also emits an understated elegance. I was excited to meet Harrison Wong as he is well known for using the highest quality materials and craftsmanship whilst keeping his pieces affordable. During my time in New York I had the honour of securing some time backstage to interview Harrison about his Gradations collection. Let’s take a look at what we got up to in those 10 minutes.
1. Tell me a bit about your collection
Harrison: The collection is inspired by the mid-20th Century abstract expressionist Mark Rothko. I created fields of gradient tones as prints and patterns to complement and magnify the lines of my fitted overcoats and oversized sweatshirts.
2. How did you start designing?
Harrison: My love of fashion shows and fashion design led me here. It’s been an incredible 15 year journey and I loved every bit of it.
3. Who is your inspiration?
Harrison: It isn’t exactly a person that inspires me but I am often inspired by understated elegance and artistic art pieces which more often than not are the inspiration behind my collections.
4. Is this your first time at New York Fashion Week? How do you feel about your experience this season?
Harrison: This is my third time doing a show at New York Fashion Week. It’s always so busy and crazy and I’m just glad to be a part of the ride. From fittings to the show to the post show interviews everything in New York is fast paced.
5. What direction do you see yourself going? What’s next?
Harrison: Currently I am focused on launching my collection into stores globally and taking some time to sit down with potential buyers.
That’s all for today with Harrison Wong – Creative designer of Harrison Wong. I hope you enjoyed the interview and feel free to comment below and let me know your thoughts on the up and coming designer! Special thank you to Hong Kong Trade Development Council for hosting the Fashion Hong Kong runway show and this interview for us.
